Towards inclusive and climate-resilient neighbourhoods
As one of Commit2Green's pilot cities, Barcelona is advancing a district-level strategy for integrating nature-based solutions in ways that strengthen social inclusion, climate resilience and ecological connectivity. The city's participation is led by the Àrea Metropolitana de Barcelona (AMB), building on a strong local commitment to sustainability, innovation and co-creation.
Focus areas
Barcelona's pilot activities are centred on:
▸ Enhancing public space and green infrastructure in socially and climatically vulnerable neighbourhoods
▸ Strengthening community participation in planning and implementation processes
▸ Connecting district-scale greening initiatives with metropolitan planning and mobility strategies
▸ Ensuring that nature-based interventions contribute to biodiversity, cooling and flood mitigation
Pilot demonstrator
Barcelona will implement a demonstrator project in a selected district, where co-designed nature-based solutions will be tested in real urban conditions. This site will serve as a learning ground for inclusive engagement, ecosystem services mapping and evaluating the impact of greening measures at both local and city scale.
Key features of the demonstrator will include:
▸ Community-driven design processes
▸ Blue-green infrastructure integrated with grey systems
▸ Monitoring tools to assess climate performance and social acceptance
