Scaling NbS for a greener and more equitable city

Milan is working to expand the role of nature in urban planning through district-scale interventions that enhance climate resilience, biodiversity and social well-being. Building on its strong policy commitment to sustainability and innovation, Milan is integrating nature-based solutions into neighbourhood regeneration and long-term urban strategies.

The city's involvement is led by Comune di Milano, in collaboration with academic and design partners that bring expertise in environmental planning, participatory processes, and urban biodiversity.

Pilot demonstrator

The Milan demonstrator will be located in a neighbourhood facing both environmental and social vulnerabilities. Through a participatory and evidence-based approach, the pilot will test nature-based interventions that respond to local needs while supporting broader municipal objectives related to climate neutrality and equity.

Key components include:

▸ Co-creation of green public spaces with residents and local stakeholders

▸ Integration of biodiversity and climate performance metrics

▸ Alignment with Milan's city-wide greening and climate strategies
