Nature-based solutions for urban regeneration and social inclusion
Sarajevo, as one of Commit2Green’s pilot cities, is exploring how nature-based solutions can support equitable urban regeneration and climate resilience in the context of rapid urbanisation and socio-economic transition. The city aims to enhance green infrastructure in underserved neighbourhoods, while strengthening participatory governance and ecological awareness.
The pilot is led by Grad Sarajevo in collaboration with local and regional partners that contribute expertise in sustainability, community engagement and environmental education.
Focus areas
Sarajevo's pilot focuses on:
▸ Addressing urban vulnerabilities through nature-based solutions in public spaces
▸ Involving local communities in shaping greening strategies and identifying priorities
▸ Enhancing accessibility to green infrastructure in disadvantaged urban areas
▸ Building local capacity for nature-inclusive planning and implementation
Pilot demonstrator
The Sarajevo demonstrator will be implemented in a neighbourhood where environmental pressures intersect with social needs. The pilot aims to co-develop green interventions that not only improve urban microclimates and biodiversity, but also serve as catalysts for civic engagement and inclusive place-making.
Planned features include:
▸ Participatory mapping and stakeholder engagement activities
▸ Small-scale, high-impact greening measures aligned with community needs
▸ Monitoring tools to assess environmental and social benefits over time
