Climate adaptation through inclusive urban greening
The Hague is one of Commit2Green's pilot cities, working to integrate nature-based solutions into its broader urban development and climate adaptation strategies. Through its participation in the project, The Hague is exploring how greening interventions can be co-developed with local communities to address environmental challenges while fostering social cohesion and spatial equity.
The city is represented in the project by Gemeente Den Haag, with support from knowledge and implementation partners.
Focus areas
The Hague's pilot work is focused on:
▸ Strengthening local climate resilience through multifunctional green infrastructure
▸ Engaging residents in the planning and design of public spaces, particularly in vulnerable neighbourhoods
▸ Enhancing biodiversity and ecosystem services within the urban fabric
▸ Creating synergies between greening strategies and housing, mobility and spatial planning policies
Pilot demonstrator
The demonstrator in The Hague will showcase nature-based solutions co-designed and implemented in collaboration with citizens and local stakeholders. It will provide insight into the social, ecological and planning dimensions of greening interventions at district scale.
Core components include:
▸ Participatory planning workshops and tools
▸ Implementation of blue-green-grey infrastructure in selected locations
▸ Evaluation of co-benefits such as cooling, stormwater management and improved public space quality
