Urban greening as a pathway to resilience and quality of life

Thessaloniki is advancing nature-based solutions to address urban challenges such as heat stress, limited green space and social fragmentation. The city is focused on transforming public spaces into inclusive, climate-adaptive environments that promote well-being and ecological connectivity.

The pilot is led by Dimos Thessalonikis (Municipality of Thessaloniki), supported by design, innovation and research partners with strong expertise in participatory urban planning, sustainability and spatial design.

Focus areas

Thessaloniki's work within the project is centred on:

▸ Expanding access to quality green infrastructure in dense urban areas

▸ Improving local microclimates through targeted NbS interventions

▸ Engaging communities in the design and use of public space

▸ Integrating nature-based strategies into broader planning and mobility frameworks

Pilot demonstrator

The demonstrator site in Thessaloniki will be implemented in a neighbourhood with significant environmental and social pressures. Co-designed with local residents, the interventions will test how small- to medium-scale green transformations can create visible improvements in liveability and climate performance.

The demonstrator will include:

▸ Co-creation workshops and participatory design activities

▸ Green infrastructure integrated with local needs and existing urban systems

▸ Monitoring of ecological and social impact indicators
